International College in Mitrovica
In the multiethnic city and one of the oldest urban settlements of Kosova, Mitrovica, the new building of the International College opened last autumn, with the other one following at the other side of the “divided” city. The already build building, designed by URBAN Plus, is situated adjacent the Iber River on the south side of the city – between the railroads Skopje-Prishtina-Belgrade, while the other plot allocated for the building “B” resides in the northern part of Mitrovica, in a more residential area.
By learning and education becoming a fundamental element of postmodern consumption, Municipality of Mitrovica has identified YOUTH & HIGHER EDUCATION as areas on which city development should be based. Therefore this project is a joint effort of a multidisciplinary team to design the International College buildings, which apart from the cultural and educational activities also can operate in harmony with the natural environment.
Enclosed in an area of 5,000 m2, the building “A” design proposal incorporates student accommodation plus related academic and learning facilities, and creates a visual appropriateness of a qualitative environment. Conceived by URBAN Plus in close cooperation with the building’s future users, the building project is generated based on the principles of green architecture, thus respecting the surrounding environment.
Whereas the already finished building project, the building “B” structure consists of three floors linked to each other by the visual experience of it. Emphasizing thus the core part of the building through the glazed façade as an open and enclosed public space.
Looking though the current political issues of Mitrovica, with the city divided by a river and a bridge, the new buildings will surely add an energizing vibe to the city, by anticipating the means of future coexistence.
