Aion: the table as a system of edges, structure and services

Foster + Partners Industrial Design and Walter Knoll’s new table collection makes the edge, support and concealed services part of a single furniture system.

A table sets the scale of a room long before it is occupied. Its length determines where people gather; its supports affect how chairs can move around it. With Aion, launched at London Design Festival in September 2026, Foster + Partners Industrial Design and German manufacturer Walter Knoll focus on these everyday relationships.

The collection combines a curved wooden table with a matching credenza. The tabletop can stand on dowel legs or bladed side panels, offering two different readings of the same form: an open arrangement of individual supports, or a more continuous base that gives the table a stronger presence within a room.

Three edge profiles change the character of the top. A straight edge, a bevelled edge and a rounded edge allow the collection to move between more defined and softer outlines. Veneers and Fenix surfaces provide further variation, while the credenza can share the table’s finish.

The manufacturer’s documentation singles out the rounded Fenix edge. The surface follows the profile rather than stopping at a sharp perimeter, with a solid wood edge introducing a material contrast. That junction is a useful detail to examine: it brings the finish into contact with the part of the table people touch most often.

Technical infrastructure is accommodated underneath. Concealed panels help stabilise the table while incorporating cable management. Mesh nets gather cables toward the centre; a hook-in attachment allows them to be repositioned or replaced. These components keep services accessible without making them the dominant feature of the furniture.

Aion is intended for residential and commercial settings. Its architectural value rests in that balance of room-scale form and small construction decisions. The collection offers a consistent visual language while leaving choices about support, edge and finish to the particular space in which it will be used.
