The Expanded Fondation Beyeler by Atelier Peter Zumthor

Atelier Peter Zumthor has completed the expanded ensemble of the Fondation Beyeler in Riehen, Switzerland, adding three new buildings to the museum campus while extending the relationship between architecture, art and landscape.

The new ensemble entered its preview phase on 26 September 2026 and is opening gradually through 14 January 2027. It brings the existing museum by Renzo Piano together with Zumthor’s Wyss Museum, Ammann Pavilion and Erlen Gatehouse, alongside restored historic buildings and a substantially enlarged park.

The Wyss Museum adds around 1,500 square metres of exhibition space across three floors. Its monolithic form responds to mature trees within the site, while large openings frame views towards the surrounding landscape. Locally sourced Jura limestone appears throughout the building, from the rammed-concrete façade and terrazzo floors to staircases, benches and interior wall finishes.

Rather than concentrating the expansion in a single volume, Zumthor distributed the programme across three buildings. The Ammann Pavilion acts as a public lounge during the day and a venue for concerts, talks, screenings and performances in the evening, while the Erlen Gatehouse contains workspaces and facilities for art logistics.

The project also opens almost 10,000 square metres of previously private parkland to visitors, nearly doubling the size of Beyeler Park. Vogt Landscape Architects led the restoration of the historic landscape, which includes mature trees, ponds, meadow areas and a direct connection to the Landschaftspark Wiese nature reserve.

The opening exhibition, “Constellations,” spans both the Renzo Piano and Peter Zumthor museum buildings as well as the expanded park. The preview period continues into January 2027, after which the enlarged Fondation Beyeler is scheduled to move into full daily operation.
