Restaurant in JEN Hangzhou by Linehouse

Linehouse Layers Hangzhou’s Industrial Memory into JEN’s Hotel Interiors

Linehouse has designed the interiors of JEN Hangzhou by Shangri-La, a new hotel beside the Dongxin River on the former Hangzhou Oxygen Plant site. Opened in August 2026, the hotel occupies an 18-storey building by Kohn Pedersen Fox. Its industrial references belong to the design of a new hotel, rather than a wholesale conversion of an old factory.

The arrival lobby combines earth-toned marble, oak panelling and informal furniture. Patchwork patterns in the floor and a bespoke rug refer to the surrounding neighbourhood’s streets and tiles. A textured work by Elsa Jeandedieu introduces an abstract reading of the nearby canal and bridges.

Hospitality spaces are concentrated on the sixth floor, bringing the restaurant, bar and function rooms into one elevated setting. Red brick, concrete and metal connect this level to the site’s industrial associations, while handcrafted tiles and timber introduce a different scale of texture.

The triple-height Koan Bar is organised around an undulating black metal staircase. Platforms incorporated into the stair create places to pause and gather as it rises towards an upper terrace. Circulation becomes a social element within the room, rather than a separate route attached to its edge.

In the guest rooms, curved ceilings accommodate indirect light, while glass-block bathroom walls admit a diffuse glow. These changes in surface and light distinguish the private rooms from the more robust materials of the shared spaces.

Led by design principal Alex Mok, Linehouse’s approach gives the hotel several contrasting atmospheres. The most useful architectural connection is between the large shared interiors and their smaller details, where local references are translated into material, pattern and movement.
