Bajgora wind farm to add 105 MW to Kosovo’s energy capacity

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development has provided a €58 million loan for a wind farm in Bajgora, Mitrovica. The planned facility will have a generating capacity of 105 MW.

The total project cost is €169 million. More than 200 people are expected to be employed during construction and subsequent operation, Koha Ditore reported.

In its announcement, the EBRD said Kosovo, which relies predominantly on coal-fired electricity generation, would soon benefit from cleaner electricity supplied by the country’s largest wind farm.

The EBRD loan forms part of the financing package. Additional funding is being provided by Erste Group Bank and NLB, with guarantees from the German export credit agency Euler Hermes.

According to the EBRD, Bajgora would represent approximately 10 per cent of Kosovo’s installed capacity and avoid 247,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually, contributing to climate-change mitigation.

The bank described the wind farm as a major step in Kosovo’s energy transition and the largest new energy facility built in the country since 1980.
