Ny Anstalt: a prison designed as a more humane place
Ny Anstalt in Greenland presents a different image from conventional prisons. Located beside Mount Sermitisiaq, the building scarcely resembles a place where dangerous offenders serve their sentences.
Its aim is to be a “more humane place”, according to project director Jette Birkeskov Mogenson and architect Thomas Tuus Christensen.

Ny Anstalt looks more like a ski resort than a prison. Its 76 cells each measure 12 square metres and have no bars on their windows.
Forty cells are reserved for particularly dangerous offenders, while the other 36 accommodate prisoners who leave during the day to work in Nuuk and return to sleep at night.
