Germany tests sleeping pods for homeless people

Ulmer Nest, a company seeking to help homeless people, has developed small sleeping shelters resistant to water and wind.

The pods are in Ulm, described in the original report as 120 kilometres from Munich. If testing proved successful, they could be used throughout the country.

Made from timber and steel, the shelters provide enough space for two people.

They protect occupants from cold, wind and moisture while allowing fresh air inside.

The pods also protect users’ privacy. Rather than cameras, they have motion sensors that notify social workers when the door opens, helping ensure that occupants are not disturbed during cleaning.

A communication system allows users to contact the maintenance team. Solar panels collect energy for heating.
