IKEA and Xbox Bring Gaming Into the Shared Living Room
IKEA and Xbox bring the shapes of play into everyday furniture, asking how a gaming setup can share a room with the rest of domestic life.
A gaming setup can quietly take over a living room. The screen determines where people sit, cables occupy the corners, and controllers migrate between the sofa and the coffee table. YXSTABY, IKEA’s 2026 collection developed with Xbox, treats those small domestic negotiations as furniture problems.
Launched from 1 October, following an August announcement, the collection includes seating, storage and a television stand on castors. Its muted colours make room for recognisable references to the Xbox controller. A thumbstick becomes a stool; the directional pad supplies the shape of a cushion and a stainless-steel platter.

The stool is the clearest translation. Developed using the controller’s original three-dimensional files, it enlarges a familiar component to bodily scale, with a rounded base that allows it to tilt. That shift gives an otherwise ordinary seat an immediate association with play.
The more useful design argument lies in mobility and storage. A television stand that moves suggests a room with more than one arrangement. A chair with a place for a controller acknowledges the objects that accompany sitting, rather than leaving them to accumulate on nearby surfaces.
In IKEA’s official photographs, these pieces occupy a bright living room alongside plants and familiar household furniture. The setting presents gaming as one activity within a shared interior. It is an approach that could appeal to people who want space to play without giving the whole room a dedicated gaming identity.
There is still a tension in the collection. The controller references make the furniture distinctive, but may also determine how long an owner wants to keep it. A recognisable shape can be affectionate and playful; it can also make an object feel tied to a particular enthusiasm.
For an interior, the practical test is whether the pieces remain useful after the game is switched off. Seating, accessible storage and movable equipment can earn their place through daily use. The strongest aspect of YXSTABY is its invitation to consider those needs together, rather than treating leisure technology as something added after the room is finished.
