INI Design Studio Reconnects Surat to the Sea at Dumas

At Dumas Sea Face, a continuous promenade gives Surat a new way to inhabit its coastline. INI Design Studio’s scheme joins movement, play and gathering along the Arabian Sea, replacing a fragmented waterfront experience with a connected public landscape.

The overall masterplan covers 252.2 acres across four zones. This article focuses on the 31.8-acre first zone, which opened in March 2026; the wider plan should not be read as entirely completed.

Paths organise a sequence of plazas, gardens, play areas and places to pause beside the water. Curving shade structures and sculptural landmarks make these spaces recognisable, while pedestrian and cycling routes allow the landscape to be experienced at different speeds.

The project also brings drainage and planting into the design of public space. Permeable surfaces, bioswales and stormwater systems address runoff, while salt-tolerant planting responds to coastal conditions.

Designed for Surat Municipal Corporation, the project was published by gooood on 30 October 2026 using material supplied by INI Design Studio. Photographs are by Vinay Panjwani; the masterplan is by the studio.
