Ten residents, identical apartments, different lives
While helping a downstairs neighbour repair her apartment door, Romanian photographer Bogdan Gîrbovan noticed that her home had the same layout as his, yet looked and felt completely different.
He was inspired to document how people express themselves through their homes, photographing residents inside their apartments. All photographs were taken from the same angle, showing identical layouts with distinct furnishings.
Gîrbovan lives on the tenth floor of the Bucharest apartment building, constructed in 1966.

Mrs Bita has occupied her ninth-floor apartment since 1967 and has lived alone since 1976.

Mrs Ene and her husband, both pensioners, have lived on the eighth floor since 1967. Her husband has been confined to bed for years.

Ionut lives alone on the seventh floor.

The sixth-floor resident is a public figure who chose to remain anonymous.

Mrs Sucariuc Ioana has lived with her cat on the fifth floor since 1967.

“Don Lukas”, a pseudonym, lives on the fourth floor with his girlfriend.

The third-floor apartment was for sale. Its owners live outside Romania; the photograph shows Cojanu Ilie, president of the apartment block.

A mother and daughter share the second-floor apartment. The daughter, formerly a professional athlete, moved in with her mother after her husband died. Both preferred to remain anonymous.

The woman on the first floor lives alone. She moved there in 1989 after retiring from a long career designing banknotes.
