Restoration work begins on Prizren’s historic buildings

Emergency intervention projects in Prizren’s Historic Centre have begun.

The old post office and the Zhuriq family house are among the buildings undergoing restoration, KTV reports.

Civil society groups describe the action as overdue but appropriate.

Ec Ma Ndryshe, which has repeatedly criticised deterioration in the area, says action to protect the Historic Centre could not wait any longer.

The Regional Centre for Cultural Heritage is implementing the projects with a budget of more than €500,000, allocated by the Ministry of Culture in the preceding year.

The centre’s representatives say some projects have already been completed.

These include work on the Myderriz Ali Efendi Mosque, while restoration and repair of public fountains remain underway.

Hoxha said there were 20 projects in total, which he expected to be completed within the year.

Interventions in the Historic Centre, protected by specific legislation, were accelerated after Xheneta Gashi died when a house wall collapsed in the area the previous year. /KOHA.net
